You are getting the best with Koffman.
Q. What is the turnaround for a project
We require 16 weeks lead time for delivery. You will receive a tracking number for your order.
Q. I would prefer to support local producers vs importing windows and doors
Koffman is a New Zealand company, located in Christchurch. We supply windows and doors nationwide.
All components in local windows are imported often from China and shipping cost/CO2 is build in in each window, whether you buy it made in New Zealand or imported.
Q. Will the uPVC discolour over time?
No, at Koffman uPVC is UV stabilised, ensuring the colour remains and does not fade.
Q. Are uPVC windows and doors expensive?
No, the energy savings and reduced maintenance costs associated with uPVC make them an affordable choice in the long run. These are the standard option in Europe and economies of scale at the factory makes it affordable for our customers.
Q. Why choose uPVC over aluminium?
uPVC is a great insulator, maintenance-free, resistant to corrosion, rot, and degrading.
Q. What is the thickness of your double glazing?
24mm spacers are used between the panes of glass in double glazing, triple glazing uses 2 x 18mm spacers. Very few local window frames can support that.
Q. I like the look of aluminium but want uPVC?
We provide clip-on aluminium frames that give the look of aluminium with the benefits of uPVC.
Q. Can I replace existing windows with upvc?
Yes, they are excellent for new builds or existing houses, reach out and we can provide you with a quote
Q. Are all uPVC brands the same?
No, quality varies. Inferior brands often lack UV stabilisers, leading to discolouration and poor performance. Koffman only supplies trusted, high-quality European brands.
Q. Is the uPVC lead-free?
Koemmerling uses lead-free PVC with green stabilisers based on calcium and zinc. This guarantees the products we supply at Koffman work to protect the environment and people manufacturing the products.
Q. What is the life expectancy of uPVC?
Koemmerling windows are designed for 40 years of service life and up to 5 times recycle of materials
Q. Is uPVC cheaper than aluminium?
Yes, uPVC is cheaper
Q. What is better, uPVC or Aluminium?
The two systems are different and comparison needs to be based on the specific needs for each application. Both systems can be equally good regarding thermal performance. uPVC can be less expensive but may have size limitations when compared to aluminium which is a stronger material. Colour choices are also practically unlimited in aluminium.
Q. Can I install uPVC into existing frames?
Yes, get in contact with us to discuss your options.
Q. Why don’t you offer the 70mm Kommerling windows?
Smaller profiles like 70mm are too small to fit triple-glazing units. Smaller frame limits sizes of opening sashes and doors.
Q. I’m not sure which option to choose for my home
Give us a call or reach out, whether you’re trying to achieve building code, build an energy efficient home, increase your current home’s energy efficiency or build to the passive house standard, we can provide advice and help work within your budget.
Q. Do uPVC windows require maintenance?
Minimal maintenance is required which also makes them a great option for rentals, or holiday homes.
Typically all uPVC windows require is a wipe down with a damp cloth.
Q. What is Regal Air?
Regal air is a double-stage wind pressure regulator which provides ventilation minimising moisture, they are a great option for holiday homes for peace of mind.
Q. Are uPVC windows energy efficient?
Yes, they provide excellent insulation, reducing energy costs
Q. What does the chamber system mean?
When looking at the cross-section of uPVC profiles, it is the number of “air pockets” created inside that improves the thermal insulation.
Q. Are there any limits to customisation?
uPVC has some size limitations and does not support bi-folds and triple sliders. However, if you would like these, we can use aluminium systems along with uPVC and match the colour.
Q. Why do your windows open inwards?
Opening inwards allow for the use of versetile tilt and turn mechanism. Tilting at thop gives better room ventilation and security.
Q. Are uPVC doors secure?
Yes, they feature multi-point locking systems and strong frames. Our doors have min RC2 rating and RC3 is possible with the specialised glass option.
Q. Can I customise the design?
Yes, uPVC doors come in various styles and colours to suit your taste
Q. Are uPVC doors energy efficient?
Yes, they provide excellent thermal insulation.
Low thermal conductivity: uPVC does not readily conduct heat, this reduces the transfer of heat between the inside and outside of a building.
Air chambers: uPVC profiles used in windows and doors contain multiple internal air chambers, these act as barriers to heat transfer.
Weatherproofing: uPVC is naturally resistant to moisture and does not warp or degrade when exposed to harsh weather conditions. This weatherproofing helps to maintain the integrity of the insulation over time.
Seal tightness: uPVC windows and doors are designed to fit tightly against frames, minimising air leakage and drafts.
Q. How is colour added?
Colour is added by vinyl laminate, it is UV resistant and is bonded to the material to ensure it lasts.
Q. Why is aluminium the more expensive option?
Aluminium windows from Europe have superior energy performance compared to locally thermally broken frames. Internal insulation components can give Koffman aluminium windows the same thermal properties as uPVC. We can accommodate triple glazing and offer twin colour options as standard. This is a premium product.
Q. Do we need triple glazing in NZ?
Triple glazing will keep your house warmer in the winter but equally it will help to keep it cool in the summer. For that reason it is recommended for all regions of New Zealand.
Q. What is a thermally broken aluminium window?
Thermally broken aluminium windows feature an insulating barrier within the frame, typically a plastic profile, which separates the inner and outer layers of aluminium. This reduces heat transfer
Q. How do you tell if something is thermally broken?
To identify if something is thermally broken by looking at the framing cross-section or taking a look at the thermal performance values of the system.
Q. How does a thermal break improve window performance?
A thermal break improves window performance by reducing the heat transfer through the frame, maintaining indoor temperatures, and enhancing energy efficiency.
Q. Can Aluminium windows be customised?
Yes, aluminium windows can be customised with a wide range of hardware, profile options, and colours through powder coating.
Q. What is the R value of thermally broken aluminium windows?
Regal air is a double-stage wind pressure regulator which provides ventilation minimising moisture, they are a great option for holiday homes for peace of mind.
Q. Why do some aluminium windows underperform?
Aluminium windows should be installed recessed into your wall, rather than mounted over the cladding. This installation method ensures that the warm barrier in the middle of the glass and frame is connected to the insulation barrier in your wall, maximising energy efficiency.
If aluminium windows are not installed correctly, several issues can arise:
- Heat Loss
- Condensation
- Mould growth
- Draftiness
Q. Why does the glass matter
The type of glass used in aluminium windows significantly impacts their insulation properties. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, double or triple glazing, and argon gas between panes enhances energy efficiency, reduces heat transfer, and improves indoor comfort.
Q. What are thermally broken aluminium doors?
Thermally broken aluminium doors feature an insulating barrier within the frame, typically a plastic profile, which separates the inner and outer layers of aluminium. This reduces heat transfer
Q. What colour options are available?
There is practically unlimited colour options
