What are Aluminium windows?
Aluminium windows are window frames constructed primarily from aluminium, a lightweight and durable metal known for their strength, resistance to corrosion, and low maintenance.
Aluminium is highly conductive, as a result, aluminium doors and windows are prone to losing heat and condensation. At Koffman, we provide top grade thermally broken double and triple glazed aluminium windows so you can enjoy the look and design without the downsides.

Contact UsWindow Opening Types
Tilt

- The window tilts inwards into the room, remaining fixed at the base.
Turn

- The window swings open like a door.
Fixed

- The window is set in a closed position. It can not be opened.
Slide

- The window opens by sliding horizontally.
Bifold

- The window folds into each other by a number of hinged framed window panels.
Tilt & Turn

- The window can either swing open like a door or tilt inwards for ventilation.

Why windows matter
Fire Rated Windows
Three-cavity profile system designed for the construction of internal and external fire barriers.

Installation Matters
“Many products which theoretically meet new H1 requirements will be creating thermal bridging and condensation both inside the house and inside the walls.“
Windows should be installed recessed into your wall, this means the line of thermal barrier down the middle of the glass and frame are connected. If the windows are hung out over the cladding, you can expect to experience heat loss, condensation and a cold and draft feeling close to the window.

How is my home more secure with Koffman?

The glass in our windows is fitted from inside the house, which means unlike other frames, the glass isn’t susceptible to burglars pulling the rubber seal and removing the glass from the outside and gaining entry without making noise.
Multipoint locking system: The turn of a handle locks the sash surrounding the window, unlike single latch windows in NZ. Our windows have min RC2 rating and RC3 – these are possible with specialised glass option.
RC2
All-round fitted system with octagonal locking bolts, steel keeps on the frame, lockable window handle and anti-drilling protection which ensures resistance to attempted break-ins.
RC3
Equipped with an even higher number of octagonal locking bolts at small distanced between locking points. RC3 can also withstand intensive burglary attempts with tools.

What are thermally broken aluminium windows and doors?
Thermally broken windows and doors are insulated in both the frame and glass. They feature double or triple glazing with layers of argon gas between panes, separated by non-conductive spacers. This design interrupts the transfer of heat through conduction, making them highly efficient.
Why are thermally broken windows and doors important?
Standard double glazing keeps the heat in and cold out but it does not prevent heat transfer through the window frame. Aluminium, being highly conductive, is not an effective insulator. By incorporating a thermal break within the frame, using material that poorly conducts heat, the transfer of heat through the window is significantly reduced.

Why is not all thermally broken aluminium the same?
The effectiveness of thermally broken windows and doors depends on the size of the thermal break. Larger thermal breaks can interrupt more heat transfer, providing better insulation and energy efficiency.
Warmer in winter
Cooler in summer
Reduced energy consumption
Reduced condensation
“We think that in the future aluminium double glazed windows will be viewed the same as single glazed windows are now. Koffman Triple Glazing Super insulated windows installed as per the Superhome Movement detail is currently the best way forward.”
Why does the spacer thickness matter?

The thickness of the spacer directly impacts the window’s ability to insulate against heat transfer. A properly sized spacer helps maximise the insulating properties by optimising the gas layers’ effectiveness in reducing conduction and convection.
Adequate spacing helps maintain a warmer interior glass, reducing the risk of condensation forming on the inside.
A thicker spacer enhances the soundproofing capabilities of the window by increasing the distance between the glass panes. – larger gaps are better at dampening sound vibrations.
A thermally broken window has a non-thermally-conductive material inserted into the aluminium frame in a way that disrupts the transfer of heat by breaking the thermal bridge between the interior and exterior of the building. By interrupting the flow of heat through the frame, thermally broken aluminium windows significantly reduce heat loss during the colder months and heat gain during the warmer months.

Q. What is a thermally broken aluminium window?
Thermally broken aluminium windows feature an insulating barrier within the frame, typically a plastic profile, which separates the inner and outer layers of aluminium. This reduces heat transfer
Q. How do you tell if something is thermally broken?
To identify if something is thermally broken by looking at the framing cross-section or taking a look at the thermal performance values of the system.
Q. How does a thermal break improve window performance?
A thermal break improves window performance by reducing the heat transfer through the frame, maintaining indoor temperatures, and enhancing energy efficiency.
Q. Can Aluminium windows be customised?
Yes, aluminium windows can be customised with a wide range of hardware, profile options, and colours through powder coating.
Q. What is the R value of thermally broken aluminium windows?
Regal air is a double-stage wind pressure regulator which provides ventilation minimising moisture, they are a great option for holiday homes for peace of mind.
Q. Why do some aluminium windows underperform?
Aluminium windows should be installed recessed into your wall, rather than mounted over the cladding. This installation method ensures that the warm barrier in the middle of the glass and frame is connected to the insulation barrier in your wall, maximising energy efficiency.
If aluminium windows are not installed correctly, several issues can arise:
- Heat Loss
- Condensation
- Mould growth
- Draftiness
Q. Why does the glass matter
The type of glass used in aluminium windows significantly impacts their insulation properties. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, double or triple glazing, and argon gas between panes enhances energy efficiency, reduces heat transfer, and improves indoor comfort.
